Satellite Radio

satellite radio

Satellite radio is one of the more exciting developments in broadcasting since FM began. The technology offers static-free, high quality digital audio for a much broader geographic area. The system works by bouncing a signal from a satellite into space, where it’s then transmitted back down to a specialized receiver in car stereos or home systems. The receiver decodes the encrypted signals and provides a wide range of channels with music, sports, talk and news programming, often free from commercials. It’s not for everyone — and satellite radio providers have to offer a subscription service in addition to the hardware — but for many people, it’s an easy way to get top-notch digital audio.

In the United States, there are two satellite radio services: Sirius and XM. Until 2008, the companies were competitors, and the services operated out of the same facilities in the United States. In 2009, XM bought rival Sirius to avoid bankruptcy, and the merged company, now called SiriusXM, continues to operate in North America.

Choosing the best satellite radio depends on a number of factors, including sound quality, price and available features. Look for a system that can deliver satellite channels, with the option to listen via Bluetooth or over Wi-Fi, and for a radio with enough preamp outputs to power your car speakers and a subwoofer. Also consider parental control, which allows you to lock or unlock certain channels to prevent access to age-inappropriate content while driving.
