Satellite Radio

Satellite radio offers near CD quality music beamed from space to your car, truck, aircraft or boat. It provides more stations than traditional AM and FM radio, plus it typically features fewer commercials. It works on a subscription basis and requires a special receiver, which is included with new vehicles or purchased separately. It is the dominant audio entertainment service in the United States and Canada. It was first introduced in the early 2000s and grew in popularity thanks to its exclusive music, sports, news and talk programming and its coast-to-coast coverage.

Satellite radio is a digital broadcasting service that transmits encrypted musical signals from studio transmitters to a satellite network. The satellites then rebroadcast the signal to cars, trucks and boats that have a compatible satellite radio receiver installed. The receiver decodes the signal and plays back a variety of channels, including music, news, comedy and sports. Some satellite services also offer text information like stock quotes and weather reports along with the musical content.

The two leading satellite radio providers are Sirius and XM. They were originally separate companies but merged in 2008 and now operate as SiriusXM, which is the only provider of American satellite radio.

A number of modern vehicles come with Sirius or XM satellite radio pre-installed. Most used Hyundai vehicles at Carter County Hyundai are also equipped with this technology, but to activate the service you will need to begin a trial or buy a subscription plan. You can also add satellite radio to your vehicle by installing a SiriusXM satellite vehicle kit, which consists of a satellite tuner and antenna that can be connected to the head unit or an available aux input jack in your vehicle.
