How Satellite Radio Works

Satellite radio is a technology that allows you to listen to hundreds of channels without having to change stations. This is particularly convenient for long trips where you may be driving through different cities or even countries.

How It Works

All of the major radio services (Sirius, XM and WorldSpace) use different broadcasting systems to deliver their signals to their customers. These include the actual satellites that orbit the Earth, ground repeaters and radio receivers that receive the signal.

The Sirius system uses three satellites that orbit the Earth in a highly elliptical geosynchronous orbit. This makes it possible for them to reach higher in the sky, which reduces how often their signals are lost.

XM also uses a similar system to Sirius, but it was originally broadcast from two geostationary satellites that covered parts of North America and northern Mexico. Because of the difference in orbit, the XM signals are less strong in urban areas and may be cut off when driving through tunnels.

You can easily set up satellite radio in your car using a kit that comes with the antenna and other hardware. These kits usually also come with instructions on how to install it.

In addition to the ability to listen to various channels, satellite radio can also be used for hands-free calls and music streaming. Some also offer Bluetooth for wireless connectivity, which is a great feature if you want to listen to your favorite songs and podcasts while driving.
