Satellite Radio

Listening to the radio and driving are a classic combination, and the best satellite radio systems can make it even better. They can offer a wide selection of music, news and talk channels in addition to more niche programs that you wouldn’t get on traditional broadcast stations. And, most subscription services are advertisement-free.

All satellite radio services rely on a network of satellites and ground repeaters to deliver sound (radio signals) to the subscribers’ receivers, which decode and play them. They operate on a paid subscription model and are typically available in the form of portable devices and built-in car stereos.

The most popular satellite radio service providers, Sirius and XM, both launched their satellite radio systems in the early 2000s in the United States. Each broadcasts from different satellites, which are positioned in geostationary orbit above the Earth and move with the planet’s customary rotational pattern. This allows them to cover the entire country at all times without interruption from obstacles like trees or tall buildings.

These companies also competed to attract marquee talent, including celebrities such as Howard Stern and Oprah Winfrey. But the companies’ high debt loads ultimately brought them down and led to a merger in 2008 that resulted in the new SiriusXM company.

The resulting system can be used in the same way as conventional broadcast radio with the added bonus of streaming from your smartphone. If you own a car, there are also satellite vehicle kits that allow you to connect the tuner directly to the head unit. The radio will then receive the signal directly rather than through FM and will produce superior sound quality.
